Arabic has 28 letters. All are consonants — vowels are shown as diacritical marks (tashkeel / تَشْكِيل) written above or below the letters. Most letters take four different shapes depending on their position in the word: Isolated · Initial · Medial · Final. Six letters only connect from the right and have two forms.
